Developing your Graduates with commercial and business skills to be the best that they can be

The Graduate Development project is part of the Specialist Skills Support Programme (SSSP) that the University of York is delivering in partnership with Arden Matheson Training Solutions, and is funded by the European Social Fund as part of the European Structural and Investment Funds Growth Programme 2014-2020.

The Programme builds a network for graduates within businesses. There will be six training workshops providing training in soft and commercial skills. Each training event will involve a 3-4 hour live workshop. There will also be some online training materials to accompany this and further resources for the Graduates to transfer their learning into their role. We can accept up to two graduates from each business.

  • Negotiating & Influencing – Wednesday 10 November

  • Dealing with Conflict – Wednesday 24 November

  • Graduate Presentations – Wednesday 8 December

Our Cohort 2 starts in November 2021 and our Cohort 3 starts in February 2022

Developing your Business through Graduates

As part of the Specialist Skills Support Programme and the University of York, we are excited to launch our Graduate Development programme to support SMEs in developing their businesses through Graduates.

  • This programme has 100% funding for SMEs to support business growth, scale up and profitability.

  • Our cohorts start from September 2021 and we will have other cohorts starting later in the 2021 and in 2022.

THE GRADUATE PROGRAMME

6 Modules delivered bi-weekly (3-hour sessions per Module), live delivery through Zoom

Post module applications and action plans to transfer into the business and make an impact

Working with other Graduates from other businesses and learning through peer-to-peer support

Interactive, engaging sessions
Learning relevant and current business models, applications and business psychology

Business Case Proposal – Graduates will work on a business challenge to their SME across the programme and present back their solutions at the end.

Graduates 6 Module Development Programme:

Module 1: Induction and networking

Induction to the group and learning from others, building wider professional and business networks, having a growth mindset, engagement techniques to build rapport and credibility with others, building a personal brand and perception, sharing the chosen business problem, building your relevant market and sector knowledge for credible conversations

Module 2: Business appropriate communication.

Adapting our communication in business to the audience and review the range of communication styles, Personality Modelling and adapting communication to individuals, engaging others through communication to create clarity, credibility, professionalism and rapport

Module 3: Commercial awareness.

Define and review techniques to develop commercial awareness, identify the impact of commercial awareness and pitfalls of lack of commercial awareness, utilise case study approaches to identify senior level priorities, business vision and strategy and business growth, applying these into your business, presentation skills development

Module 4: Negotiation and influencing.

Defining negotiation and influencing and how this plays a part in the everyday workplace internally and externally, review when influencing and engagement plays a role, utilise current research and techniques to engage, negotiate and influence in the workplace.

Module 5: Dealing with conflict.

How to avoid unnecessary conflicts as well as how to de-escalate situations in the workplace, either with customers or colleagues, and find solutions that work for all parties. Techniques to handle difficult conversations and techniques to build resilience and a positive mindset when handling difficult work situations.

Module 6: Graduate presentations.

Graduates will have the opportunity to present back their business case solution action plan and also present back their key learning from the programme. They will be able to share how they will apply and transfer this learning to their role. This session will conclude the programme by allowing the graduates to demonstrate their solutions or new approaches.
