As the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris come to a close, the world has been captivated by extraordinary athletic achievements and moments of amazing human determination. From record-breaking sprints to breathtaking gymnastics routines, these games have once again showcased the pinnacle of what is possible when individuals push the boundaries of their abilities. The triumphs and challenges of these athletes resonate far beyond the stadiums, serving as powerful reminders of the importance of mindset, resilience, and high performance in every aspect of life.

One of the standout moments of this year’s games was witnessing athletes overcome immense obstacles to reach their goals. Whether it was the heart-stopping finish of the Men’s 100-meters, or the nerve-wracking balance beam performances, each event provided a window into the relentless pursuit of excellence. The stories of athletes like Simone Biles, who navigated the complexities of mental health while competing at the highest level, have inspired millions around the globe.

In this spirit of celebration and reflection, Tim was fortunate enough to attend NatWest’s Team GB Olympic event in Manchester, where the focus was on high performance and the power of mindset. The event featured an inspiring talk by Heather Fisher, an Olympian known for her grit, resilience, and deep insights into what it takes to succeed not just in sport, but in life.

Heather’s session was a deep dive into the elements that drive success, blending personal anecdotes with actionable insights that can be applied far beyond the world of sport. Heather spoke about the importance of knowing yourself intimately.  Her comment that “Performance starts with knowing yourself inside out” was a powerful reminder that self-awareness is the foundation of any high-performing individual or team.

Heather also introduced the concepts of red and blue thinking, using these terms to describe the emotional versus logical approaches we take in both personal and professional settings. Red thinking, she explained, is driven by emotion, often leading to reactive decisions. In contrast, blue thinking is rooted in logic and calm, enabling more strategic and effective outcomes. This framework provided a new lens through which to view challenges, both in sport and in business, highlighting the crucial role that mindset plays in driving performance.  Heather challenged us to consider, “are you being driven by red mist or cool blue thinking?”

One of the most impactful moments of Heather’s talk was her emphasis on the role of feedback in fostering a culture of high performance. Drawing parallels between the worlds of sport and business, she illustrated how continuous feedback is essential for growth and improvement. Just as athletes rely on their coaches to provide real-time insights that refine their techniques and strategies, businesses thrive when they cultivate environments where feedback is not only welcomed but sought after.
